Chinese is a fascinating language to learn. There are different characters and phrases with extremely interesting meanings and also lots of historical stories to learn about. And there are also multiple festivals and holidays celebrated by the Chinese speaking population. Today, we will talk about three interesting Chinese TV shows that will not help you improve your Mandarin skills but also teach you about Chinese culture and society.

The first show I want to introduce is called “if not sincere, don’t disturb”. The Chinese dating show was modeled after the American dating show take me out, the Australian equivalent if you are the one, and the Malaysian show the perfect match. The show was hosted by a baldy man called Meng Fei and was broadcast by the Jiangsu Television Center on a weekly basis. And it is viewed internationally both online and on the Television. During the show, one man shows up on stage facing 24 different single women, from different walks of life. The man will be given a chance to show his self-introduction video so that the 24 women will be given a chance to know the man. The man will also be allowed to choose his secret crush, who can either accept or refuse him. And as his self-introduction video gets played, the women on stage may still knock the red light button on the podium to declare they are not interested in the guy, after which they will offer the reasons for the rejection. And for the girls who have not shut their lights off, the girls can ask him questions or vice versa so that they can understand each other better. And if a girl finds him unattractive through the conversation, she can switch the light off for him. And this is a very good show not only to learn about words and phrases related to dating, love and marriage, but you will also get to understand the mindset of Chinese boys and girls in choosing partners. And the participants in this show come from different parts of China, so you will be hearing accents from all different parts of China. So if you are trying to find a Chinese girlfriend/boyfriend, this show is highly rated because you can really know what people expect in a relationship/marriage.

The second show I want to introduce is a TV series called home with kids. Although it was first aired in 2006, its popularity still remains today and many non-Chinese speakers still used this TV series to improve their Mandarin skills. The actors spoke in Beijing dialect, and used lots of 儿字音 which is like tongue twisting in their conversations. The three seasons depicted the life of a typical Beijing family, that was merged by two families that had undergone divorce. The mother in the series the mum LiuMei had a naughty boy called Liuxing, and the father Xiaodonghai had a daughter called Xiaxue, and a son called Xiayu. And together the five of them formed a family and had undergone periods of happiness and conflict. The mother Liumei is the director of nurses at a local Beijing hospital. She has a very tough personality, and shows stronger preference towards traditional ways of education. At home, she demonstrates stronger preference to Xiaxue because she has shown extraordinary talents in many different skills and also performs very well in school, and often inflicts corporal punishment on his mischievous boy Liuxing. The father Xiadonghai is a writer who has received American education and has a more liberal mindset. He is easygoing and child-friendly, and always loves to negotiate on equal basis with his children. And Liuxing is the naughty boy at home. He performs poorly at school, but he is extremely sporty, chivalrous, and creative. His biological mum Liumei dislikes him strongly because of his naughty behaviors at home. And Xiaxue is an excellent girl in both of her parents’ eyes. She is good at school and teaches her two little brothers how to behave. And she suffered from severe depression for not scoring enough mark for the Tsinghua University. Another young boy called Xiayu moved to Beijing with his father at a very young age. He speaks the perfect American English, but due to his poor Chinese skills, he often makes funny cultural/language mistakes. He often brags himself as the handsome little overseas Chinese. By watching this show, you can learn standard Beijing tones and commonly used slang in Beijinger’s daily lives. And you will also get to learn some intricate family and educational problems in China. The show is fun yet satirical and plain yet insightful. And it is also strongly recommended.

And the third show I want to introduce today is called the bite of China. It is a TV documentary series talking about the history and traditions of Chinese food and dining. The show takes us to 60 different locations all over China, and not only does it talk about the local cuisines themselves, but also talks about other aspects of the town related to the cuisines, such as the weather, the agriculture, the history, and the local customs, all of which have contributed to the food making process. Notable chefs such as Shen Hongfei were also consultants on this project. Now let’s talk about some of the delicious food that were introduced in the program throughout the different episodes. Matsutake, which is a Chinese style mushroom called 松茸, was the first delicacy to be introduced in the program. The mushroom is unique in China, and has won accolades from all over the world. It is grown on the Tibetan plateau where the air is clean, the oxygen is sparse, and the temperature is low-year round. And in order to be kept fresh, it must be stored under extremely low temperature. And the show takes us to a tiny little village in Yunnan province with Tibetan cultural identity the Matsutake is grilled around the fire. The rice noodle snail soup, called 螺蛳粉 in Chinese, is also a popular dish. It is a popular fast food that people eat for lunch and dinner, and is commonly sold by street vendors all over China. Although some people dislike its taste, the food has offered lots of convenience to young people with a rapid pace of life. Another extremely famous dish is called dumplings 饺子. It is widely seen from all over the world. There can be many different stuffing inside the dumpling, such as pork, beef, mutton, chives, and shrimp, and is commonly seen on the dining tables of Chinese homes and families. The food first originated in northern China, but has become a common delicacy among the Chinese population. And another interesting dish introduced in the program is called Naan 馕. It is a big pie that is grilled at Xinjiang BBQ grills, and some people joke that you can even hang the pie around your neck. The food originated in Xinjiang Autunomous Prefecture, and has become a must-order dish when people go out for Xinjiang BBQ. And Xinjiang is a mysterious place in China, surrounded by dessert, but it also has an amazing food culture.
